MW2's multiplayer on PC will be as gimped as the console versions:
No dedicated server support. Servers will be on iwnet instead, which means Infinity Ward has full control and can charge for DLC on the PC just like the consoles.
You can still do private matches and host local servers (LAN and internet, although they're "semi-capable"), but you can't mod anything on dedicated servers, so if the game needs mods to be competitive then competitive play won't happen for MW2.

Just heard about it, apparently Dedicated Servers are being replaced with some sort of IW.Net service which does a server search thing similar to the console versions. This apparently also means no mods, custom maps and charged DLC.
Can you share a source bud.
It was on some Webcast, all I know is the Infinity Ward forums are up in arms over it as it was confirmed by fourzerotwo himself in said webcast.
IW has control of the game
• IWnet servers will host multiplayer
• DLC will be a charged item for PC
• No dedicated servers
• Matchmaking system used to play with similarly ranked players
• VAC instead of PB
• Semi-capable password servers
• Semi-capable ad-hoc servers
• Competitive play is dead
• MW2 mods would not be possible
• Full integration into Steam
PC gamers just got fucked in the ass.
Activision is the new EA. When Blizzard first merged with Activision, that's when we heard about Starcraft 2 having no LAN play and being split into three full-price games. Now PC MW2 players can't make their own dedicated servers, mods, or maps, meaning that they can squeeze more money out of us for DLC while ruining the prospect of competitive play and cool mods. I guess this will stop custom servers that let pirated copies play, but still.
This doesn't sound like an IW decision. If it were, they would have decided to satisfy players, and they would have released their good news sooner instead dropping this bombshell a few weeks before release. Hell, for MW1 they talked about how they contacted modders and competitive players to see what they needed for the PC version, and that's why the game was so open for modding. They also released the map packs on PC for free in MW1 just because that's how PC gaming works - you expand interest in the game by releasing free content, unlike consoles where you just squeeze money out of existing players by charging them for stuff.
Activision's CEO Bobby Kotick is a notorious douchebag btw, who publicly enrages his customers by releasing statements like "If it were up to me, games would be MORE than $60", and "I'm trying to increase efficiency by taking the fun out of making games" (Yes he seriously said that). These dumb decisions are likely his, since he cares more about profit margins than about making customers happy (not realizing that happy customers are loyal, but hey, business schools focus on profit margins and business models instead of long-term strategies that work).
Activision is going to crash and burn suddenly. Their strategy of pushing annual sequels instead of taking on new, innovative IP has worked in the short term, but once disinterest in those series' sets in (which they're accelerating with annual sequels and boneheaded decisions to screw over PC gamers), their sales are going to bomb. It won't be a steady decline either, it will happen suddenly. And I'll laugh, and hopefully IW will find a new publisher for their new IP (they're not doing MW3), since they left EA for similar reasons.
We now have three threads about this, lol.
You can actually set a surprising number of options for private games, like which perks and air support are on/off. I don't know about weapon unlocks though (whether you can enable them all like with the competitive mods). But private games are listen servers, not dedicated, so that won't fly for competitive gaming.

private servers for matching and scrimming will be unfair because the host will have a 0ping and everyone else will ping like crazy, it will be lag like you have never seen before

Fuck this!!!!!!!!!! This game has now lost my interest because of this fucked up problem!!!!!!!!! Hope they fucking fix it before it fucking comes out or i'm not getting it!!!!!!!!
I will end up getting it for coop mode shit. Which alone is worth the money. Kinda gay what they did with multiplayer but who knows if they dont have something else in mind that they aren't revealing.
