Distilled list of new features:

Release date: Friday, July 17
Price points: Subsidized $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) price points, mandatory 2-year service contract
Design: Sleeker design, discontinuation of the metal band surrounding edges of the phone, rubber-tread backing, Apple logo on the back that lights up during the call
Display: OLED screen, conserves battery life as it needs less power to run
Battery life: 1.5 times greater than current iPhone’s battery
GPS: Turn-by-turn directions feature baked into Maps application
The killer feature: Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, and Google maps that identifies buildings and location in images taken with iPhone’s camera, providing additional information about them.

Consider this: You take an image of, say, LA’s Staples Center and your iPhone automagically puts building and area data up, including related Wikipedia info.

According to a post on the iPhoneApps site, citing a source “closely connected to Apple’s hardware development team,” the next iPhone allegedly lands July 17, a little over a year since iPhone 3G launched.

Much more intriguing, however, are new pieces of information hinting that upcoming iPhone revision packs more substantial hardware changes than depicted in all rumors to date.

New information corroborates what we know so far about the upcoming iPhone, like a 3.2-megapixel camera with lens focus, video recording capability and software support for direct video editing on the device, double the storage (16GB/32GB instead of 8GB/16GB), twice as much RAM (256MB vs 128MB), double the CPU and GPU power and magnetometer sensor.

New iPhone may feature glowing Apple logo on the back.

The killer design feature: Glowing Apple logo

More specifically, a source indicated Apple would replace iPhone’s LCD display with OLED screen. A significant advantage of OLED displays over LCDs is that OLEDs do not require backlight to function. Thanks to this, and yet unknown improvements in the battery department, the next iPhone’s battery will run 1.5 times longer.

On the design front, the phone will apparently look “sleeker,” replacing smooth plastic back with rubber-tread surface found on the back of BlackBerry phones.

In addition, the phone will no longer feature shiny metal running around the edges of the device.

This doesn’t mean that upcoming iPhone will lack the shine factor as the killer design feature will apparently be the Apple logo on the back that lights up, presumably when you bring the handset close to your ear to answer a call. The source didn’t explain if users will have the ability to turn this feature off in order to maximize battery life or if the logo will remain lit whenever you use the device, which could easily annoy some users.

Innovative use of camera and sensors

The most exciting new feature has to be innovative use of iPhone’s camera, in combination with the GPS circuitry, the new magnetometer sensor and Google Maps cloud service. The combined hardware, software and cloud service combo will intertwine together to automagically identify buildings and locations taken on your images.

Here’s how the iPhoneApps described this functionality:

The next iPhone may be able to detect buildings on your images and provide additional information about them.

“The GPS would be used to determine the physical location of the device. The compass would be used to determine the direction the camera was facing. And the orientation sensor would be used to determine the orientation of the camera relative to the gravity.”

The source indicated that even the focal length and camera focus information could be used to help pinpoint the distance of focused objects in the picture.

You would be mistaken to dismiss this feature as a nice-to-have cosmetic, but otherwise useless addition.

Consider this detailed description of the feature:

“If you were to take a picture of the Staples Center in Los Angeles, you will be provided with a prompt directing you to information about the building, address, and/or area,” adding that data provided would include information from sources such as Wikipedia.

i do believe that this is false.

if Apple was to release a newer iPhone version, it would have already been announced during Apple's release to the press about the 3.0 OS. many articles covering the demonstration were waiting for that "and one more thing" Apple has been doing yearly (see: iPhone 3G last year) but there was no announcement.

I call bollox. either way, i'm more excited for the 3.0 OS then a new iPhone

yeah i agree. I find it kind of cool either way some of the things there talking about.

But peepers the new Iphone is coming out. Release date is still unsure(Unless this post is true)
However what was talked about the new iphone was really nothing new or spectacular updates to it. Also, demonstrations and prototypes of the new iphone were hitting youtube etc about a week ago, and apple went on a nazi rampage and had them removed. So there is speculation that this post could be true if apple relaly doesn't want people to know.

it's highly possible that a new phone is in the works, but the only other feasible day to announce it would be at WWDC, and that's in what, 2 weeks?

I don't expect a new phone from apple until they see how the new OS does and once they see exactly how Palm's new phone will hold up against the 3G
